Refreshing Cucumber or Strawberry Toner

Facial Toners
You can easily make your own toners. If you prefer to buy mild toners, we have two versions. One for sensitive skin and one for outbreaks.

You can make your own toner easily with vodka, glycerin and fresh strawberry (or raspberry) or cucumber. Or a mixture of both….

Take 70 g of vodka and mix with 30 g of spring water. Add a tea spoon of glycerin.

Cut your strawberries in half or your cucumber into slices.

Use a large jam jar with a screw lid. Put your strawberries or cucumber (or both) into the glass and cover with your vodka/water mixture. Store in a sunny warm place, shake at least once a day for 2 weeks. Personally I prefer my toner to sit for 6 weeks. When the time is up take a sieve and pour the mixture into a bowl. If you want to make sure there are not tiny bits of cucumber or strawberry in your toner, pour the content into a funnel that is lined with a coffee or tea filter and that sits over a glass jar.

Filtering can take a long time – be patient, leave it over night and the next morning your mixture should have filtered through into the glass jar. Dispose of the filter with the cucumber and strawberry bits, close the jam jar tightly with the lid and store cool and dark.

To use the tone take a small bottle with a flip top, pour some of the mixture into it and close the bottle with the flip top. Using a soft cotton wool pad, squirt some of the toner onto the pad and wipe your face and neck with it (after you have cleansed your skin). Wait for a few seconds and then apply a gel or your moisturizer/cream/lotion.

Both toners have a very pleasant aroma. Strawberry is full of flavonoids which are great for tired, aging skin. Cucumber is rich in minerals and enlivens dull skin.

I personally don’t worry about the alcohol in the toner. I found that it evaporates so quickly, it doesn’t have a negative effect on my skin and it certainly doesn’t dry it out.

Shelf life: at least 1 year. Vodka is a natural preservative and no other preservatives are needed, but make sure you don’t store the toner in full sunlight.
